Councillor Noel Harrington from Castletownbere is the seventh Mayor of the County of Cork. A member of Cork County Council for the past nine years, Cllr Harrington was first elected in 1999 and he retained his seat in the Local Elections in 2004 representing the Bantry Electoral Area. His late father, Donie Harrington was a member of CCC from 1974-81. The Mayor serves a 12 month term and is elected at the annual general meeting of Council in June. Under the 2001 Local Government Act, the title of Chairman changed to 'Mayor of the County of Cork', making Councillor Paula Desmond the first Mayor of the County in 2002. Coincidentally, Cllr. Desmond was the first woman to be elected to the Chair of CCC in 1994.
